As if the Nintendo 3DS wasn’t cool enough already, the news keeps getting better! Not only will the device offer glasses free 3D technology, it will also offer you yet ANOTHER way to get Netflix on a portable device. Nintendo recently confirmed Netflix will be available on the 3DS this summer.
The 3DS will let you start watching a movie on Netflix with your Wii, and then take off an watch the rest of it on the go via your 3DS. Of course you can also do it the other way around too!
We already know what you’re thinking, “Will the Netflix video be in 3D?” While there is currently no option of streaming 3D video via Netflix, we are betting it isn’t so far off. Nintendo has already hinted it plans on offering 3D movie trailers on the DS as early as this summer! Awesome!
Nintendo is partnering with AT&T to make full use of the 3DS’s “SpotPass” feature. ATT and Nintendo plan to provide over 10,000 wireless access spots for the 3DS throughout the United States. Word is these WiFi hotspots will be made available by the end of May. For the gamer on the go these wireless hotspots will allow you to connect your 3DS to the internet to download firmware upgrades, access data, get your Netflix fix and more!
Nintendo also just announced that the 3DS will offer 3D video capture. We already knew the 3DS will offer the ability to take 3D-like still images with its two cameras, but 3D video capture takes the 3DS to a new level of cool!
The Nintendo 3DS is slated for a March 27th, 2011 U.S. release date. It will be available in two colors: “Aqua Blue” and “Cosmos Black” with a $249.99 price tag.
While the news is pretty cool it’s not all that ground breaking for me as an adult who already has the option of getting Netflix on nearly every device and mobile device conceivable. However, this was the deal maker for my nine year old son. It seems walking around with access to streaming video on demand is the holy grail for pre-teen gaming males. He almost flipped his lid when I told him about the Nintendo 3D’s Netflix capabilities on the way home from school yesterday. He states, and I quote,:
“Netflix?! AWESOME! Now I HAVE to get one!”
